One of the very few things I will miss about Facebook is the NZ Bug Identification group that I helped to run. I’ve always enjoyed the insect & arachnid world, and have become quite good at identifying the New Zealand varieties.
Some of the group members are pretty amazing photographers, so a while back I set up a public website dedicated to showcasing some of the stunning photography.
If you like critters, go and have a look at https://www.nzbugs.org/.

We have a couple of spiders in NZ that will give a nasty bite, but deaths are shrinkingly rare since the advent of anti-venom drugs. The Katipo (Latrodectus katipo) is the only highly-venomous native spider. It’s a protected species because it’s endangered. The Australian Redback (Latrodectus hasseltii) has self-introduced and is very similar in appearance to the Katipo.
